Block braids aftercare: what to do the first 2 weeks with Knotless Braids

We love hearing “my braids look awesome” the moment you’re done. Now the most important rule: for the first 24 to 48 hours, keep your scalp dry and don’t over-handle your Knotless Braids. Let them settle. That one step cuts down frizz, keeps tension calm, and helps your parts stay neat longer in Augusta’s humidity.
The first 24 to 48 hours: protect neat parts and calm your scalp
Right after installation, your scalp is adjusting. We generally recommend you treat the first two days like a “settling period.” Keep your hands out of your hair as much as you can. Constant touching makes frizz show up early and it can make the base of the braid feel tighter than it needs to.
Skip water on the scalp for 24 to 48 hours. That means no steamy shower directly on your head, no soaking the roots, and no heavy oiling right away. If you have a little tenderness, keep your hair down or in a loose, low style for a couple days. Avoid tight ponytails, high buns, or pulling the braids forward. Your edges will thank you.
Quick rule we repeat in the chair: if it feels tight, don’t style it tighter. Let us know early so we can help you keep the look you asked for without stressing your scalp.
And yes, plan for several hours for knotless braids or box-braid styles. Your time depends on your hair length, thickness, and the braid size you choose. We’d rather do it neat than rush it.
Days 3 to 7: wash timing, sweat control, and keeping frizz down in Augusta
Your first wash is where a lot of people accidentally shorten the life of their knotless braids. Wait 48 to 72 hours before your first gentle cleanse. Focus on your scalp, not the length of the braids. The goal is clean roots without creating buildup inside the braid.
A simple first-wash method that keeps braids looking “just done”
- Dilute a gentle shampoo with water in an applicator bottle (or use a cleansing spray). Apply to the scalp in sections.
- Massage lightly with fingertips. No nails. No scratching.
- Rinse thoroughly, then squeeze excess water out with a towel. Don’t rub the braids.
- Dry your roots completely. In humid Georgia summers, damp roots plus sweat equals frizz and that “stale” scalp feeling fast.
If you work out, you don’t have to stop your routine. Just be smart about sweat. Keep a clean towel for your hairline, blot instead of rubbing, and let your scalp dry out after. A lot of our time-crunched commuters and military families love knotless braids because they’re low-maintenance, but sweat management in week one is what keeps them looking neat, not fuzzy.
If you’re passing through the Bobby Jones Expressway corridor, we can also help with quick check-ins and refresh advice. People come to us for “very clean and professional” work, and keeping it clean at home is what protects that fresh finish.
Night routine for Knotless Braids: satin, edges, and zero breakage habits
If you only add one habit, make it satin every night. A satin scarf or bonnet keeps friction off your braids, and friction is what turns a neat install into frizz quicker than it should. If you hate bonnets, a satin pillowcase is still a win.
For longer braids, gather them into a loose “pineapple” on top of your head or a very loose bun. The keyword is loose. Tight styles at night pull on the base and on your hairline. If your edges are your priority, keep the braid direction natural and avoid pulling them forward to make a dramatic top-knot in the first week.
Edge-saving tip: if you wake up and your scalp feels tight, take the style down right away. Tension left for hours is what usually leads to irritation.
Moisture without buildup: what to use (and what to skip) in weeks 1 to 2
Knotless braids don’t need heavy products to look good. Heavy creams, butters, and sticky edge controls tend to grab humidity and lint. That’s when the roots start looking dull and “gunky, ” especially in Augusta summer weather.
A simple 2-times-a-week routine
- Lightweight moisturizing mist on the hair and braids.
- A small amount of light scalp oil 1 to 2 times weekly, applied with your fingertips, not poured.
- If itching pops up, cleanse the scalp gently instead of scratching. Often it’s sweat, product, or dry skin, and scratching just creates frizz at the base.
If your goal is long-lasting “neat” braids: keep product light, keep your scalp clean, and keep your hands off the roots.
Swimming, travel, and when to reach out to our Augusta team
We recommend skipping chlorinated pools and salt water for the first two weeks. That’s the period where the braid base is still settling, and water plus friction can make the roots fuzzy early. If you have to get in the water, wear a protective cap when you can, rinse right after, then clarify your scalp and dry your roots fully.
What’s normal in week one: mild tightness that fades, a little scalp sensitivity, and a few flyaways as you get used to not touching your hair. What’s not normal: persistent pain, bumps, or a spot that feels like it’s pulling nonstop. Let us know. We’re big on being professional and listening, and we’d rather help you early than have you silently suffer at home.
